Masturbation in boys and men: At what age and how often?

Even babies can become sexually aroused. During puberty, boys often feel a much stronger desire for sexual arousal because of sex hormones. The basic rule is: There is no “too much” as long as you enjoy it.

What is masturbation?

You sexually arouse yourself. And you increase your sexual arousal. That is solo sex. It does not matter whether you ejaculate or not.

At what age do boys start masturbating?

People can feel sexual arousal from a very early age. Sexual arousal begins with the arousal reflex. In boys, the arousal reflex can already be observed in the womb. Even babies can become sexually aroused. They may rock or move back and forth and press their body against a surface. As soon as they have enough finger control, many also play with their penis. This way, they practice feeling their penis. Depending on the child, they may also learn to become sexually aroused. Boys may have a climax with orgasm-like feelings even before puberty. Once they are sexually mature, they can have their first ejaculation during this.

How much masturbation is normal?

Very simple: You can masturbate as often as you want. Some people feel like doing it several times a day. Others feel like ir several times a month. Others almost never do. Masturbation is a very personal thing. Maybe your friends, classmates, or someone else thinks a certain amount is "right" or "wrong". Don't let that confuse you. Listen to your own desire. A survey on our website showed the following results.

Is it normal to masturbate when I am in a relationship?

Many people masturbate when they are in a romantic relationship. Maybe they simply want sex more often than their partner does. Or maybe they feel like having sex when their partner is not there.

When does masturbation become a problem in a relationship?

It can become a problem if you would rather masturbate than have sex with your partner. Imagine this: masturbation feels good, but sex with your partner does not. Or you can only become really sexually aroused during masturbation. Is that the case for you? Then it makes sense to learn new ways to become sexually aroused. There are methods that also work well for sex in a relationship. We have written many tips about this. Take a look at our chapter "Sex tips and exercises for men and all penis owners".

Does the body need a certain amount of masturbation?

Imagine you never become sexually aroused. Your body can handle that just as well as becoming sexually aroused several times a day. Sperm are stored in the epididymis. If you do not ejaculate, your body breaks them down again. So you do not need to ejaculate regularly.

What are the benefits of masturbation?

Masturbation can be good for your body. When you become sexually aroused and ejaculate, your body produces more testosterone. And your genitals get better blood flow. You can learn how to control and enjoy your sexual arousal. Masturbation gives you a good opportunity to practice this.

Can it become too much for the body?

That depends on how you masturbate. Does your penis get sore after masturbation? Or do you have a headache afterward? Does masturbation feel exhausting, one-sided, and not very enjoyable? Then you may have gotten used to an arousal technique that is not so good for your body. In that case, it is a good idea to learn new ways to become sexually aroused. Then you can enjoy it more. Maybe right now you press and rub your penis while keeping the rest of your body completely still. Instead, you can move your body more during sexual arousal and press and rub less strongly. What if I never get enough?

Do you somehow never feel satisfied and never get enough? Maybe you think it is not normal how often you masturbate. Please read our text "Am I addicted to sex (or porn)?".

Why should I know about masturbation?

Maybe this is the first time you have read that the amount you masturbate can be normal, and that you can learn new ways to masturbate. Missing information can lead to problems. What matters is that you know this: You have a right to accurate, up-to-date information about sexuality.
