Why is an abortion/miscarriage performed under general anesthesia, and would it be possible to do it without anesthesia?

Unsere Antwort

In some countries you are right. Surgical abortion or surgical interventions after a miscarriage are generally performed under general anesthesia. In other countries it is more common to do it under local anesthesia. Medical procedure in case of a surgical abortion or surgical removal of pregnancy tissue after a miscarriage vary between different countries and between different clinics in the same country. Which country are you talking about?

In the best case scenario you can choose between local anesthesia or general anesthesia.

If you are curious about the recommended options for pain management in surgical abortion you can read more in the clinical practice handbook for quality abortion care by World Health Organization. There you can find a whole chapter on recommended pain management.
